Two Cups…And a Glass of Champagne

“Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.” But I say unto you, they are inseparable. Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.” ― Kahlil Gibran

I received two cups today
and a bottle of champagne
to celebrate my birthday.
I heard before
that sorrow and joy
from the same cup flow.
But, perhaps,
we need two cups
to truly know.
One cup to fill with warmth
and the other with sand.
When drinking joy
warms up our heart
remember we must
sorrow might strike anytime.
And when it does,
as it surely will,
we should run its sand
through our fingers and
feel the ocean’s kiss
of many waves
and the sun’s embrace,
see the rainbow
after every rain.
Once we feel the iridescent beauty
falling upon our hair
there are always champagne bubbles
to help us celebrate life’s
Yin and Yang, and
our precious,
vulnerable Self.
PS: Thank you, Mom and C & L, for making my Birthday Happy!
