Art of the Heart

“All the world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming.” – Helen Keller

There were times
long ago
when the heart
felt whole.
Then the waves of life
crushed the soul,
cutting through
like merciless storm.
With pain rushing
over the hills
grabbing every naked tree
with its greedy arms
not leaving one green leaf
behind. Full destruction,
desolation, no cover,
no roots in the soil,
only bloody pieces,
only sorrow.
And then came the rain,
washing off all the stains
like a sweet dream;
so soft with hope
pouring over
the burnt landscape.
Singing its touching song
for the heart to heal
its scars and
like a mosaic
to become a piece of art.
Never the same
but beating, one breath
with the morning light,
changing with the midnight stars.
How beautiful the art
of the resilient heart,
unless it’s broken to the point
of no repair.
